Shellfish Water Sanitary Profiling

Shellfish concentrate microbial pollution from human sewage and livestock sources. Growing the best quality shellfish therefore requires high quality growing waters.

CREH have completed detailed catchment studies at shellfish harvesting waters for UK regulators, water and sewerage undertakers and Governments.

These have deployed the CREH catchment science and sewerage impacts expertise to design remediation strategies for key sites.

Other studies have focused on quantification of the impacts of both low-level chronic pollution and intermittent elevated pollution loadings on shellfish quality.

Quantitative sanitary profiles have been completed for key UK harvesting waters using the extensive database describing export coefficients and sewage quality amassed by CREH since 1996.

Solutions, driven by a top-quality evidence-base, include: targeted agricultural BMPs; disinfection of continuous and intermittent effluents; and nearshore modelling and management.
