Catchment Microbial Dynamics and Modelling

CREH has completed over 200 major catchment surveys for the UK regulators, water companies UK governments and the EU since 1998.

This work has produced the first microbial export coefficients published world-wide for common land uses.

Initial export coefficient models for prediction of microbial impacts on bathing and shellfish waters have been used for sanitary surveys of key resource sites in projects funded by the Scottish Government, SEPA, Defra, UKWIR and the Environment Agency.

Recent work has focused on the efficacy of sustainable best management practices (BMPs) by the farming sector designed to reduce microbial pollution from the livestock sector.

Major EU funding was awarded to the CREH team, under the FP7 programme. This was designed to inform the Commission on the potential to use viral pathogens as regulatory compliance parameters for bathing waters. Empirical data was collected in Hungary, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Brazil.
